History of the residency program
The residence program went through several different stages before it’s current format. Since 1997 with the creation of CAPACETE in a residential apartment in the Flamengo neighborhood, it was of extreme importance to offer the basic needs to the invited artist.
In 2000 we inaugurated the first Artist’s Residence in Santa Teresa which worked as the starting point for several different residency programs. The French residency program, the Finnish residency program (HIAP + Frame), the Japan Foundation program and many other of several different countries, to mention just a few that were involved in the making of more than 70 projects realized in Brazil. Many more artists went through our facilities without being part of the CAPACETE program.*
Since 2006, CAPACETE is part of a south american network together with El Basilsico and Lugar a Dudas to foster exchange in south america.
CAPACETE integrates the visiting artist into the local artist community and helps him with logistical aspects of his/her project.
Since the beginning CAPACETE has been trying to build a residency program for Brazilians and South American artists. With time a residency program that would not include Brazilians and South Americans would be politically questionable. The importance of such a program is still not part of the local government’s agenda. Until now we were able to insert some South American artists into our program, but due to the lack of local governmental interest we were not able to expand this on it.
Residential programs are of vital importance to the local art system for such cities of the size of Rio de Janeiro. Most artists participating in this program have been selected by their financing foundation or by the directory of CAPACETE. Due to this situation, and being a private non-profit organization, CAPACETE has been trying to build a mechanism that will turn the selection process of this program more democratic. The lack of local financing makes this quite a difficult challenge.
After 9 years of activity with residencies and applying several different equations to finance this program, we have inaugurating 4 new space/residencies which are also located in Santa Teresa. We will be working with most of our partners that have helped us through these years. The novelty is that this new challenge is designed to be able to host Brazilian and South American artists and authors. Until we are not able to respond to the problem on a more democratic selection of artists through a commission with national grants, we will continue to search for new solutions and ideas.
* We work with several collaborations on diferent levels: El Basilisco (Argentina), Lugar a Dudas (Colombia), French Residency Program (France), L’age D’or (France), FRAME (Finland), Gasworks (London), RES-Artis Foundation (based in the Netherlands), FondsBKVB (Netherlands), Japan Foundation (Japan), AIR (Belgium)
